One morning, I was sitting outside my home, when I lived in the desert. I sat outside to enjoy the quiet of a cool morning, before the scorching noon sun would compel me to go inside. As I sat languidly in my comfy chair, I caught glimpses of the wildlife moving around me. I had to squint to see the birds perched on branches in a tree near me. I looked in the direction of the pool and saw a rabbit moving towards there and how the animal blended with the surrounding foliage. I glanced and saw a lizard painted with the same green and tan colors of the stucco wall that made it difficult to distinguish him from the wall.
I thought, “Wow Lord, you designed these animals to be camouflaged, to hide them from the predators in their environment. Sometimes Lord, I just want to be able to hide from my environment.”
Then a Rhema (the a-ha moment or catharsis) came to my mind; ”But Sharon, I haven’t designed you to be camouflaged. As a Christian, you weren’t made to be hidden from the world; you are to be seen. You were made to stand out and to face your supernatural predators, which are the gods of this world. You were made to live your life openly and in the integrity of what you believe as a Christian”.
This revelation brought about a time of unplanned reflection. I reflected on a very important, thought-provoking quote:
"Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary use words.”
-St. Francis of Assissi
I know this saying to be true. Clients have come to me and said,” I know you’re a Christian because you don’t act like anyone else.” I was witnessing Christ without opening my mouth.
We are called to be the light in the midst of this dark world. We cannot be the undercover Christians. We have no choice; God didn’t give us a camouflage suit.
And this is Truly Said™
The Sword: Matthew 5:16 (NLT) “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
The Application: Integrity as a Christian; is to act and talk like a follower of Christ; even when you don’t think you are being observed. People are people watchers; you will be surprised who is watching you.
